Sanders Lectures

The Foundation funds two lectures, the Sanders Lecture given at a divisional meeting of the APA by a distinguished scholar on any topic of their choosing, and a lecture on the Philosophy of Religion at the Center for the Philosophy of Religion at Rutgers University.

2022 Sanders Lecture (October) at the Center for Philosophy of Religion at Rutgers University

Nicholas Wolterstorff gave the 2017 Sanders Lecture, entitled “Repetition and Reenactment in Liturgy,” at Rutgers University, New Brunswick.

The third annual Sanders Lecture at the APA was given by Ned Block, Silver Professor of Philosophy, Psychology, and Neural Science at NYU. This lecture took place on the morning of March 3rd, 2016, during the Central Division meeting of the APA in Chicago.

2016 Sanders Lecture at Rutgers University

The Philosophy Department at Rutgers University hosted its third annual Sanders lecturer, Eleonore Stump, the Robert J. Henle Professor of Philosophy at Saint Louis University. This lecture was held on March 16th, 2016.

2015 Sanders Lecture at Rutgers University

The second annual Sanders Lecture was given by Peter van Inwagen, the John Cardinal O’Hara Professor of Philosophy at Notre Dame. The lecture titled, “The Rev’d Mr Bayes and the Life Everlasting,” was held on March 12th, 2015, at 4.30pm in the philosophy department seminar room.

2014 Sanders Lecture at the Eastern Division of the APA

The APA selected William Lycan to give the 2014 Sanders Lecture at the Eastern Division meeting of the APA, held in Philadelphia on December 28, 2014. William Lycan is the William Rand Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

2014 Sanders Lecture at the Pacific Division of the APA

Terence Horgan of the University of Arizona delivered the inaugural APA Sanders Lecture. The title was “Injecting the Phenomenology of Agency into the Free Will Debate” and was given at 4pm on Saturday 19th April, during the 2014 Pacific Division Meeting of the APA, in San Diego, California.

2013 Sanders Lecture at Rutgers University

In conjunction with the Rutgers University Philosophy Department, the inaugural Sanders Lecture at Rutgers was given by Robert Adams on November 14, 2013. Adams’s talk was entitled “Pantheism.”
